Day 21: A New Side of Pa

Over the past couple months I have had the chance to get to know my grandfather (who we call Pa) pretty well, but today I was able to see a side of him that I hadn't gotten the chance to see before. We had a few appointments at the hospital (just some pre-op things for his upcoming knee surgery, nothing to worry about) and I got to see his "patient" side. No, not his "let's sit here and wait like good children" side, his "hey doc give me the details" side. And I think I liked it! He was funny, and he had a sense of humor that I hadn't ever seen him with before. He would crack jokes with a completely straight face and act like he was serious. For example, he had a blood sample taken and when the nurse went to put a band-aid on the puncture it didn't bleed right away. So she just rhetorically asked him where his blood was? And he replied instantly (I mean not a second to think this up) "oh, I left it at home." Isn't he AWESOME??

I truly admire him, his attitude the whole day and how he kept things light and fun with the nurses and me, they showed me that you really are in control of how a situation goes for yourself. If you let yourself get down because you have to get stuck with a needle, then yeah it's gonna suck. But if you try to make it a fun experience, it doesn't matter if you're getting a blood sample or getting your hair ripped out, it will be more enjoyable than the former.
